The Argentario Coast is the place to go if you’re looking for the Maremma’s best beaches. This massive coastline runs all the way from the edges of Orbetello to Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano in one big loop. The best and most easily accessible beaches for families are located just outside Orbetello in what is known as Gianella and Feniglia. They are not the Maremma’s most beautiful beaches, but the parking is close by and the water is calm and warm for the little ones. If you’re looking for something a little more spectacular, head towards Porto Ercole on the Strada Panoramica and take your pick. All the beaches here will require you to park on the main road and walk down the cliff’s edge to the water. Always look for designated parking spaces or you might get a fine. The beaches around Porto Santo Stefano are also nice, if a little more crowded. In Italy, most beaches have paid and free sections for you to pick from. In the paid sections, you’ll get two sundecks, an umbrella and use of bathroom facilities. The Argentario Coast isn’t just known for its beaches. It also has an impressive walking and hiking trail that connects the numerous watchtowers, which were built by the Spanish centuries ago during their brief rule. The towers helped keep out the pirates that terrorised the coastline.
