The towns of the Fiora Valley are famous for two things: their hospitality and their hot springs. Manciano is the biggest in the valley and is the place to go if you want to do your shopping or try some incredible local cuisine. Manciano is game capital and you can usually find wild boar on the menu of the local restaurants anytime of year.
Montemerano is within cycling distance of Manciano and is officially one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. This tiny little town has one magnificent piazza, where you can sit with the locals admiring the original sandstone work and watching the world go by. Just be sure to stop in the local church, a modest little structure with breathtaking frescos almost wall to wall.
Saturnia is the Maremma’s shining star. She singlehandedly draws more tourists to the province then any of the other destinations combined. The world is losing its marbles for Saturnia. The Lonely Planet, CNN, BBC and pretty much every other news organization has named it one of the planet’s best free hot springs. And it is. Here the hot water flows at a constant 27°C down a waterfall and into evocative naturally carved pools. You can swim whenever you want day or night, but I promise you it will be the most luxurious bath in the most luxurious setting you have ever taken.
